Women’s Health & Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

At First Choice Health, we understand that women’s bodies change throughout different life stages, from adolescence to motherhood and through menopause. These changes can bring unique physical challenges, especially related to the pelvic floor. Our women’s health physiotherapists aim to support you through every stage of life.

Pelvic Health

Pelvic floor problems aren’t limited to pregnancy or the postnatal period, they can affect women of all ages, even those who have never given birth. Common symptoms may include:

  • Urinary frequency or urgency
  • Bladder leakage
  • Chronic pelvic or lower back pain
  • A sense of pressure, heaviness, or pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis
  • Pain during intercourse

These symptoms can also be linked with conditions such as endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Physiotherapy can help by:

  • Identifying the underlying cause of pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Using gentle manual therapy and relaxation techniques to release tension and ease pain
  • Teaching individualised pelvic floor muscle training to improve strength and coordination

Pregnancy & Postpartum Care

During pregnancy, it’s common to experience pelvic, pubic, or back pain, as well as frequent urination, constipation, or leakage. Many women also want to know how to safely stay active and prepare their body for birth. After delivery, concerns often include healing of scars, abdominal muscle separation, pelvic floor weakness, or fear of injury when returning to exercise.

Physiotherapy can help you:

During pregnancy

  • Relieve pelvic or back pain using manual therapy and stability exercises
  • Address any pelvic floor dysfunction to relieve bladder or bowel symptoms
  • Prepare your pelvic floor for birth with relaxation techniques and perineal massage

After birth

  • Provide a comprehensive 6-week postnatal check (abdominal separation, pelvic floor function, prolapse screening)
  • Guide safe return to exercise and fitness
  • Use hands-on therapy and ultrasound to relieve blocked ducts or mastitis

Perimenopause & Menopause

As you move through perimenopause and menopause, hormonal changes can bring new challenges, bladder leakage, increased urinary frequency, vaginal dryness, pelvic discomfort, muscle and joint pain, and weight gain.

Physiotherapy can help by:

  • Tailoring pelvic floor training to address bladder, bowel or prolapse symptoms
  • Providing strategies to support comfort and intimacy
  • Designing strength and conditioning programs to protect muscles, joints, and bones
