What is Exercise Physiology?
Exercise Physiology is a branch of allied healthcare that studies the effect of exercise on different pathologies and the mechanisms of how exercise prescription can reduce or reverse disease progression. Exercise Physiologists are university qualified allied health professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with a wide range of medical conditions, injuries or disabilities whether newly diagnosed or long standing.
Exercise Physiologists treat cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, musculoskeletal, cancers, kidney, respiratory / pulmonary and mental health conditions as well as any other conditions for which there is evidence that exercise can improve the patients’ health and their quality of life. As part of the allied health field, Exercise Physiologists work hand in hand with Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists to create a complete health care team.
Exercise Physiologists in Australia are governed by the peak professional body and only accrediting authority for accreditation, Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA). Exercise Physiologists are dual accredited, holding both the title of Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Accredited Exercise Scientist. Exercise Physiology is not just limited to the treatment of patients with pathologies, as experts of exercise prescription, they can also provide a beneficial service to providing education to the positive impact that physical activity can provide to help maintain a healthy lifestyle.
